Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to contest certain decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
