Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you become starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
